It helps to distinguish bleaching from surface-stain removal. Peroxide-based bleaching products can change the color of the tooth itself. Whitening toothpastes generally rely more heavily on mild abrasives to remove stains sitting on the enamel. Neither approach changes the color of crowns, veneers, implants or tooth-colored fillings, so existing restorations may look different after the surrounding natural teeth become lighter.

Causes of yellow teeth

Some discoloration is extrinsic, meaning colored compounds have accumulated on the enamel. Coffee, tea, red wine, cola, dark berries and tobacco are common contributors. Plaque buildup and inconsistent oral hygiene can make these stains more noticeable. Surface stains may respond to professional cleaning, consistent brushing or products designed for stain removal.

Other discoloration is intrinsic and sits within the enamel or underlying dentin. Gum irritation is often related to excess gel or a strip or tray that allows bleaching material to remain on soft tissue.
